Everyone will face problems at any given time. Having personal guidance will help you avoid the same mistakes your mentors may have already made. This is a tremendous time and resource saver.
My dad was my first mentor – he was a person that I respected and could always turn to. I also had a mentor when I started iMoney. Even though you can grow by yourself, it will be difficult to reach that ceiling because you can always learn more, and do more.
Here are three tips on how to be a kick-ass mentee. One: Be persistent and persevere. Two: Take risks because you are still young and you still have time. Third: There is a saying that we are the average of the intelligence quotient of our five closest friends. So surround yourself with people smarter than you!
Listen and relate to others. Truthfully, a great mentor is someone who gets along well with others – it will help you understand their problem better. I get a rush when I see someone achieve success after implementing my advice!
Lee Ching Wei is the Founder and CEO of iMoney, Malaysia’s first financial services comparison portal. Ching co-founded iMoney in 2012, when he came home from Australia after working in Melbourne for a few years. The spark for this brainchild came from his frustration going from bank to bank, trying to decide where to open a savings account and which credit card to choose. Ching longed for an easier and more transparent way of selecting the best financial products for himself. Today, iMoney has garnered over 1.8 million unique visitors a month – a clear market leader in South East Asia, serving more than 50 financial services clients and almost 400 million consumers across Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore (from www.endeavour.com).

Frontier Investment Consulting (Frontier) provides independent investment and related advice to Australian Superannuation and other investment fund clients. As at June 2011, total funds under advice was approximately A$117 billion.
1) provided asset allocation and portfolio construction advice to Superannuation fund clients. Client size ranged from A$500 million to A$5 billion;
2) fund manager research and due diligence; and
3) investment research in areas of Australian equities, global infrastructure and hedge fund.
Achievement: Joined as Analyst in December 2008, promoted to Associate Consultant in February 2011.

Shadforth Financial Group (SFG) is one of Australia’s wealth management and financial advisory firms, with over 300 employees in 14 practices across Australia (as at end 2011). SFG aims to help clients generate and maintain wealth through the provision of fee-based financial, retirement planning, and insurance advice.
1) directly involved in the formulation of financial advice for clients;
2) solely responsible for the trading of all managed funds and shares at the practice.
Selected Achievement: Initiated a "Benchmarking Project" that directly contributed to the increase of funds under management by approximately A$15 million since the inception of the project.
July 2006 - July 2008
I worked closely with two professors of the Accounting and Finance department at Monash in the research of Asian Hedge Funds. I was responsible for constructing complex asset allocation models which was ultimately used in a published paper.
