Hello mentees and mentors in FutureLab, I'm Shu Ying from the school of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University . I studies Digital Media and Communication. I'm interested in business consultant job, but I have no clue about how should I choose for my free electives -I want to choose business units- which could help me better. I am not sure whether marketing, economics or business analysis units. It would be great if you have any suggestions to excel in the skills needed. Thank you in advance.

If you want to venture into business/management consulting, you don't need to be in business school let alone take business subjects to get a chance. What the recruiters, and hiring managers would often look for are how methodical, analytical, and creative you are in solving problems. They're looking for people that wants to learn, sharpen their skills, and have that discipline to spend the hours working with them on project deliverables. Try to take on some leadership role, it could be something like volunteering, student activities, or anything that you can show that you took lead and achieve the intended results.

Hope this helps.

Just to share my opinion and experience as ex-business consultant, answer for your questions is vary actually, because role as business consultant also very wide, we can touch very wide area based on the need of the company and our expert area , from management consultant, marketing and branding, until finance. So my advise are two things, 1. ask yourself , which part of the above i mentioned attract your interest the most. 2. Be a qualified business consultant is not about the graduation paper you have only, that is only a knowledge in paper that you can use to help but the most important part is your experience, so apply to be internship students for this field and gain as much as possible experience and try doing some business yourself, experience the bitter and sweet. experience value the most. Good luck
