I'm always curious for new things, with an insatiable hunger for learning. I love dabbling in new technology, but also books and movies. Well, especially movies. I believe that the greatest ideas and innovations come from an intersection of different fields. I strive to be a generalist with a special skill, rather than a specialist with no general skills. Life is more interesting when you keep learning, and also humbling when you realise how little you actually know. Hi! I'm Ru Sern, an avid technologist, with a little creative spirit within me. I endeavour to understand a little more of how the world works everyday. My aim is to pursue life-long learning, and become a sort of modern day Renaissance Man. I hope to bridge the gap between theory and application, and academia and industry. Professionally, I have a strong background in the automation industry. I started off my career as a mechanical engineer in the machine vision, before moving on to do electronics design and software development for machine vision systems. Currently, I am working as a data scientist, looking into extracting insights through data, and deploying machine learning based solutions. I believe that my broad-based experience allows me to bring a unique perspective to the work that I do. My career has allowed me to experience working in a small-medium company, large local company, and also now a multi-national company.
The impact I want to make
I'd like to help those who are starting out, and unsure of their direction. I think the hardest part about self-learning, especially in an area you are not familiar with, is that you don't know what you don't know. Simply having someone to point you in the right direction, helps you to move faster, as well as be more motivated. I think that is the power of mentorship, where you can bring your "ungoogleable" questions, and work it out with someone else who has gone through the similar pains, saving you the headache. I have personally benefitted from my mentors in my life, and I would like to pay it forward by helping others along the way. I don't think I am a sage up the mountain who now knows everything, but I am further ahead of the curve from many others, especially if you are just starting out. My personal successes are not entirely my own, as I recognise the kind of privilege I have had, growing up. So I think this would be a great opportunity for me to use that privilege for good.
