Instead of having a business/marketing bachelor degree background, how can I, as a computer science undergraduate with pure technical working experience, kick start a digital product management role as my first try in my career development journey. Finding an internship role for product management to explore more before graduating next year, but the result wasn't as good as I applying for a technical role(less response/feedback), what should I do?

I'd recommend you to try your best to find an internship role for product management to gain diverse experience, which will open the doors to more opportunities in the future. In order to prepare yourself for that, complete extra online courses or read books about Design Thinking, UX Strategy, Customer Journey, Product Development, etc. Make sure that you include this info in your CV - to show the recruiter that you have both product knowledge and technical skills and do insist that you're more interested in product management roles. I hope this helps. Feel free to reach out to me if you need any other advice. :)

I too, didn't and do not have Business or Marketing Degrees. My quick suggestion for you is to: 1. Get yourself into the working world - doesn't matter where and what
2. If you get yourself into technical roles, even better. As a metaphor, I trust a doctor more who has performed a surgery than one who never did and only know the theories.
3. Review your interest again, periodically
4. Look for opportunities that fit your aspiration within the organization you're in, or explore externally. With technical experience, you will be better off in understanding product / solutions.
5. Read or study in between. I would not recommend to get into Business / Marketing Master's right after your Bachelor's graduation (just in case). But if you must, it is okay too.
All the best.

Thank you Melvin, for the step-by-step suggestion and development. Me too, thinking that gaining real world experience is more important than a Master cert at this moment, will certainly look into those opportunity and plan carefully along the way. Thanks !!

Hi Rachel, thank you for the awesome insights. I do develop some of the product currently as my final year project, and I am handling just a little in technical part , and try to apply what I've learnt from some Design Thinking courses online. Will try to get more into PM technical skillsets as well to equip myself to be more competitive in the future. It is my honour to connect with you, will send the connection in a minute. Thanks Again!

The inputs are really helpful and details, thank you for all the insights and idea! Really appreciate that, would go through it deeper in both creating a project and also education for PM at the same time. Thanks again, to Pat and Rachel. Cheers

aside from learning about product things, it will be more good if you can create your own project, because the recruiter is more interested in what you create, rather than what you have learned. you may ask your fellow developer friends to collaborate with you, but this time you are the product manager, find the problem/opportunity, do research, sketch, before jump into the development process. Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn, if you want further discussion because I have several internship experiences as Product Manager during my college time!:)
