As an ex-consultant myself, I will definitely recommend starting off in any of the Big 4 consultancies or other specialized consulting firms, as this gives you the widest exposure possible across different industries. Often you'd find that the technical skills you build over multiple projects are transferable, what's different is how you apply them to deliver business outcomes. Being in a consultancy does give you a head start in actually executing on insights, whereas if you join in-house analytics team the involvement will most likely only be in number crunching at the start.
